What happens on the walk?

A guide will help the group look for butterflies and recognise common species. Sightings contribute to the Big Butterfly Count, a national citizen science project that helps track how butterfly populations are changing.

No specialist knowledge is needed. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water. A phone or small notebook can be useful for recording what you see.

Getting to Nunhead Cemetery

The main cemetery entrance is on Linden Grove. Nunhead station is nearby, and buses serve the surrounding area. Check the exact meeting point in your booking confirmation because the site has more than one entrance.

Useful questions

Is the butterfly walk free?
Yes, tickets are free, but advance booking is required because places may be limited.
Do I need to know about butterflies?
No. The guided walk is an opportunity to learn how to identify species while taking part in the count.
Is it suitable for children?
A nature walk can work well for families, but check the organiser’s booking page for age guidance and book a place for everyone who needs one.
What happens in bad weather?
Butterfly activity depends on the weather. Check your email and the booking page before travelling if rain or strong wind is forecast.
