About us

Useful information for expensive times

London for Cheap is an independent guide to enjoying London without spending a fortune. We find things worth doing, explain the costs and catches plainly, and build tools that make planning London easier.

What London for Cheap is

The site is written for two groups of people who overlap more than you might think. Some live in London and want to enjoy the city they pay so much to live in. Others are visiting and would rather spend their money on the parts of the trip that matter to them.

Cheap does not mean spending nothing. Sometimes the best option is free. Sometimes it is a £5 ticket, or knowing when something normally expensive has a discount, or simply not paying for something you did not need. What we are after is value.

If you live here, London on a Budget is the best place to start. If you are planning a trip, our London visitor guides go into more depth.

More than articles

Guides when words help. Tools when they help more.

A lot of travel and money sites are lists of articles. Some questions are best answered that way, and we write plenty of guides. But when someone needs to find the nearest free water, check whether Tower Bridge is about to lift or build a day around a fixed budget, a long article is the slow way to get there.

So where information can be made easier to use, we turn it into something practical: a finder, a map, a planner or a calculator. The research is the same. The format is chosen for the person using it.

What we publish

Most of what we cover is about getting more out of London for less. That means free and affordable events, from festivals and exhibitions to talks, markets and screenings, along with free attractions, walks and viewpoints that are worth the journey.

We write about eating well for less: cheap places to eat, restaurant offers and the apps and timing tricks that make eating out cheaper. We cover the practical side of the city too, from fares and airport transfers to where to stay, written so a first-time visitor can follow it.

We also check discounts and new-customer offers, and a smaller number of legitimate ways to earn or save a little extra money. Each guide tries to answer the same questions quickly: what it costs, who qualifies, what the catch is and when it ends.

Useful before clever

A few principles shape everything we publish.

  • The price comes first. Including the booking fee, the minimum spend or the part that is not free.
  • Dates matter. An event that ended last week is not useful, so we show when things run and when we last checked them.
  • Eligibility matters. A discount for students, NHS staff or new customers only helps the people who can actually get it.
  • The catch matters. If there is a condition that changes the value, we say so near the top rather than at the bottom.
  • Official sources first. We check factual details against organisers, operators and official sources wherever we can.
  • Useful before selling. Something earns its place because it helps, not because it pays.

London changes quickly

Events finish, prices rise, offers expire and opening arrangements change. Where we can, we keep information in structured data and reusable systems, so a price or date can be updated once and corrected everywhere it appears. Expired events come off the current listings.

We still cannot promise that every detail is right at the moment you read it. For anything time-sensitive, check the organiser or provider we link to before you travel or spend money.

Independent

London for Cheap is independently run. Some links and referral codes can earn us a small commission or reward, at no extra cost to you, and that helps keep the site running. We label those relationships in the relevant guide, close to the link where practical.

A possible commission does not decide whether something is included, and businesses cannot buy a positive opinion. Not every link is an affiliate link, and we do not list every offer on the market. Our affiliate disclosure explains how it works.

Who is behind London for Cheap?

It all started with Denis, a London-based creative developer who has lived in the city for around 15 years. After years working on digital editorial projects and interactive experiences, he wanted to bring the same mix of research, design and creative technology to something useful for everyday London life.

That idea became London for Cheap: researched guides when words are useful, and practical tools when there is a better way to answer the question.

Help make it better
