London for Cheap
London on a Budget
Do London for cheap. Properly.
London can be expensive, but enjoying it does not have to be. This is our complete guide to free things to do, cheap food, affordable transport, budget accommodation, discounts and genuinely useful ways to spend less in London.
01 · Free London
Free things to do in London
More of London is free than most people expect. The permanent collections at the big national museums cost nothing, the parks are free, and some of the best skyline views need only a free booking or a walk up a hill.
The catch is planning. Free does not always mean walk-in: some places need a timed ticket, and special exhibitions inside free museums usually cost extra.
- Pick one area, not five. Cluster free stops within walking distance so travel does not become your biggest cost.
- Book the free things that sell out. Sky Garden releases free tickets on Monday mornings, three weeks ahead, and good slots go quickly.
- Keep a rainy-day backup. A walk-in museum nearby saves you from paying for shelter.
- Best free museums in London32 free museums, by area, subject and family suitability.
- Free views of LondonRoof gardens, galleries and hills, bookable or walk-in.
- Free self-guided walksRiverside, history and nature routes with maps.
- A free South Bank walking routeOne-hour, two-hour and half-day plans.
- Free things to do when it rainsWalk-in museums and indoor plans by area.
02 · Food and drink
Eat in London for less
Food is where a cheap London day usually goes wrong. Not one expensive meal, but a coffee, a snack, bottled water and a spontaneous dinner in the most central place you happen to be.
- Decide the area first, then the food. A cheaper lunch across town stops being cheaper once you add two journeys.
- Eat earlier. Early-evening restaurant discounts and set menus are where the bigger savings are.
- Use a food market for groups. Everyone pays for what they want, with no service charge to split.
- Do not buy water. London has hundreds of free refill points: our water refill finder shows the nearest.
- London food deals todayRestaurant offers, set menus and freebies, by day.

03 · What’s on
Cheap and free events
London’s free events change every week: festivals, exhibitions, markets, screenings, talks and street parties. Any list of them goes out of date quickly, so this page does not try to keep one. Use the live listings instead.
Every event in our London events calendar has its dates, price, location and booking details checked before it goes up. Expired events come off the current listings.
- Check whether “free” needs booking. Many free events cap numbers or need a free ticket.
- Live here? Look locally. Your council’s newsletter often lists free events that never reach the big listings sites.

04 · Getting around
Getting around London cheaply
For most adults, the cheapest way to pay is simply to tap in with a contactless card or phone, or an Oyster card. TfL caps what you pay in a day, so you never need to work out tickets journey by journey.
- Zones 1–2 daily cap
- £8.90
- Bus and tram daily cap
- £5.25
Adult pay-as-you-go caps for 2026. Fares change, usually each March: check the travel caps guide for every zone.
- Use one card or device all day. A phone and the same card in your wallet count as two different payment methods, and capping only works per card.
- Touch in and out on the Tube and rail. A missed touch can mean a maximum fare. On buses you only touch in.
- Take the bus when you are not in a hurry. One bus fare covers unlimited bus and tram journeys within an hour, and some routes pass most of the big landmarks.
- Walk short central hops. Many neighbouring Zone 1 stations are only a few minutes apart above ground.
- London travel caps explainedDaily and weekly limits for every zone.
- Bus routes for sightseeingSee the landmarks for the price of a bus fare.
- Cheapest London airport transfersFlying in? Every airport compared, including which accept Oyster.
- Luggage storage in LondonCheaper options than the station desks.
05 · Accommodation · For visitors
Where to stay on a budget
If you are visiting, accommodation is usually the biggest single cost of the trip, and the cheapest headline price is often not the cheapest stay.
- Compare the full price. Add booking and cleaning fees, breakfast, luggage storage and daily travel, then divide by the number of nights and people.
- Do not insist on Zone 1. A room near one direct Tube, Elizabeth line or Overground route in Zone 2 or 3 can be cheaper and more practical than a central room a long walk from the station.
- Match the room to your group. Hostels often suit solo travellers. Triple rooms, family rooms and aparthotels can work out cheaper per person than two doubles.
- Book flexibly where you can. Prices change with concerts, football and big events, and a non-refundable rate is only cheap if your plans do not change.

06 · Paying less
Discounts and ways to pay less
When you do pay for something, you rarely have to pay the headline price. The useful discounts in London are mostly not codes. They are ticket schemes, timing and eligibility you may already have.
- Arriving by train? A valid rail ticket can unlock 2-for-1 entry at a long list of London attractions. Check before buying full-price tickets.
- Be flexible with theatre. Same-day rush schemes and standing tickets, such as £5 Rush at Shakespeare’s Globe, cost a fraction of normal seats.
- Check what you already qualify for. A student card, NHS ID or your mobile network can all be worth something. If you live in London, so can a free library card.
- Only use a discount for something you were going to buy. A new-user offer is not a saving if it changes your plans.
- 2-for-1 attraction tickets by trainWhich journeys qualify, and when another fare is cheaper.
- Cheap theatre ticketsHow TodayTix Rush works and when tickets appear.
- Cheap cinema ticketsFrom £3, depending on your network and age.
- What a free library card gets youEbooks, newspapers, films, courses and more.
- Student discountsFood, London travel, shopping and entertainment.
- All checked discountsNew-customer offers with the conditions explained.
07 · Planning
Plan a cheap London day
The usual way to overspend in London is not one big decision. It is lots of small, unplanned ones: an extra journey, a snack because there was no lunch plan, a paid attraction because it was the only thing nearby. These two free tools exist to fix that.
Day planner
Build a cheap London day in about 30 seconds
Set a date, a budget per person, a part of London and your interests. The planner builds a route with one optional famous paid attraction, checked free places nearby and a lunch stop, and keeps a running total so you can see what the day costs before you leave.
