Walking is one of the best free ways to understand London. You notice small streets, public gardens, river views and local history that disappear when you travel underground.
You do not need to pay for a tour. TfL, London boroughs and local organisations publish free routes with maps, written directions and stories to read along the way.

London Bridge history walks
Team London Bridge publishes self-guided walks around London Bridge, Borough and the riverside. They are useful for discovering local history near Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral, the Thames and surrounding streets.
This is a good choice when you want a central walk that can be combined with a free museum, market or riverside picnic.
TfL Walk London routes
The TfL walking hub collects maps, short routes and longer trails across Greater London.
The main network includes:
- Capital Ring: 78 miles divided into 15 sections through parks and green suburbs
- Green Chain: woods, parks and open spaces across South East London
- Green Link: green spaces and waterways between Epping Forest and Peckham
- Jubilee Greenway: 60 kilometres linking major London landmarks and former Olympic venues
- Jubilee Walkway: central London sights including St Paul’s and Buckingham Palace
- Lea Valley Walk: waterside paths following the Lee Navigation
- London LOOP: almost 150 miles divided into 24 walks around outer London
- Thames Path: easy-to-follow riverside sections through central and west London
TfL also lists 20-minute walks, nature trails, Overground-themed walks and maps showing walking times between stations.
City of London self-guided trails
The City of London publishes themed walks with directions and historical context. Topics range from migration and trade to architecture, churches and people who shaped the Square Mile.
For example, The Mayflower, Merchants and Migration is a two-hour route beginning near Monument and continuing through the City and Southwark.
London Unseen community-history walks
London Unseen brings together self-guided trails about communities and histories that are sometimes missing from traditional sightseeing routes.
Some use downloadable maps, while others work through a free app. Check the individual route before leaving home so you know whether mobile data or headphones will help.
